The artist has donated the entirety of his £25,000 Mercury Prize winnings to the trust for venues, which operates to preserve the Britain's grassroots live music spots.

Fender was presented with the prize on mid-October as his latest record People Watching was chosen as the outstanding release of the previous year.

He has decided to give the cash to the MVT, in recognition of the essential function grassroots venues had in his initial steps.

"I would not have achieved my current career if it wasn't for all the shows I did around the North East, and beyond, when I was starting out," stated Sam Fender. "These venues are iconic, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these venues have shut down – approximately one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, top acts including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by adding a modest fee to their ticket prices, which benefits independent venues.

Sam Fender also participated, generating more than £100,000 on his live tour to assist thirty-eight small stages across Britain.

The donation supported venues that were confronting possible closure due to challenges arising from flooding, blazes and personal losses, as well as permit problems, court cases and sound issues.

Additional spaces received financial assistance in upgrading infrastructure and gear that positively impacted artists and concertgoers.

"The notion that funds from shows in big venues supports the smaller venues, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just logical," Fender has commented.

He is among several artists to give his Mercury Prize winnings to charitable organizations.

Back when Pulp earned the award in the mid-90s for their record Different Class, frontman the singer declared that the group would contribute their prize money to the organization War Child.

In 2002, musician Ms Dynamite shared her prize between multiple charities, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I donated a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they required new equipment," she shared with outlets.

Previously, they gave their funds to the community center that nurtured their band, in addition to other local music groups.

And 1994 winners they donated their award to a MS organization after a close contact was identified with the disease.

"Receiving the award was ample," remarked artist Small. "The money was the bonus but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our success impacted another person's life."

Recently, the trust revealed it had protected a couple of local spots in the South East, by transferring them to local control.

One venue in that area and the other in the city were acquired under the public acquisition initiative, which is backed by Arts Council England and supporters who purchase "shares" in the venues.
