Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system caused extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
