Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant explosions shaking Tehran, following statements from Israel that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were observed billowing over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, though it did not immediately offer further details.
Background: Rising Tensions and Prior Developments
This event takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Major developments leading up to this strike involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest talks between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of further talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed claims about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation remains fluid, with further updates anticipated as events unfold.
