Guitar Hero Turns 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Bridged the Gap Among Music Fans

Marking 20 years after Guitar Hero debuted in North America, providing everyday gamers the means to become a rock star. Figuratively speaking, but try telling that someone who has mastered the epic lengthy guitar solo before a packed living-room audience.

Developed by the developers, Guitar Hero gave players a guitar-shaped controller to follow on-screen cues moving along the screen in time with a song. Each riff corresponded to specific notes, creating the sensation of a genuine performance.

Harmonix previously experimented with rhythm games prior to teaming up with the publisher, later purchased by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Collaboratively, they established the foundations for an unlikely massively profitable series which made a significant impact on numerous of the artists featured, introducing decades-old groups to millions of younger players.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, recalls the early financial challenges of licensing the songs – even though the first two games mostly used rerecorded tracks.

“We reproduced all the music because the dollar figure was so high,” he says. “Despite having the publishing rights alone, it proved nearly impossible. We couldn’t get acts such as legendary groups – the publisher was operating on a shoestring budget, and we were fairly certain it would fail. But once Guitar Hero became a hit, album purchases airtime were going up, everyone wanted to participate.”

He adds: “Among the remarkable aspects was how many parents reached out expressing gratitude for introducing their children to the songs they adored. It became an intergenerational thing.”

Classic Rock Gains a New Audience

Northern Irish blues-rock band one featured act included their track in the 2008 release Guitar Hero World Tour. Lead musician the artist remembers the way the game revived older hits to the forefront: “The game provided a larger, new demographic. Generally such music was seen as music that was past it, but then once it got featured on the title young people were finding it, abruptly it became trendy. This validated it, and got rid of the ‘dad rock’ tag. It provided all our music renewed popularity.”

At that time, the band's debut album was still unreleased in the US, so Guitar Hero served as a primary platform of discovery for the group as they went on a North American tour opening for AC/DC. “Their crew were playing the song during travel, and some of them knew us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Major Band Spin-offs and Lasting Impact

Rock’s biggest acts quickly capitalised on the game's success, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in specialized game editions centered around their music collections and related lore, visuals and legendary status. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, it was said earned the band more money compared to their records. It sold well over half a million copies in its first week, and demand for Aerosmith’s music rose of up to 40% during an era as the industry was already collapsing.

The series still motivates nimble-fingered dedication among its fans. Earlier this year, an online personality completed a remarkable feat of DragonForce’s the challenging track – a notoriously difficult power-metal song made popular by Guitar Hero – on Clone Hero, a freeware game with similar mechanics and extensive personalization features. This track is difficult even in the hardest setting, let alone played at double speed and without missing a single one of the thousands of cues. They claimed it took months of practice to accomplish.

“The game is a fun, fantasy thing. If you play other games, it doesn't imply you ought to use actual weapons and enlist,” says musician Herman Li.

DragonForce previously wrapped up a profitable run when their hit was featured on Guitar Hero III, yet he explains it turned them into widely recognized. “I remember the record label calling to tell me that our selling albums rapidly,” he says. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we were playing right ahead of top acts at the event.”

Indeed, DragonForce’s exposure via the game was so immense that it has risked overshadow all other the band has done. Recently, the song featured in promotional material for a major film. “Previously I thought otherwise, but now I accept it,” Li says. “Should you just listen to a single track, that's fine – each person has their own musical journey and I'm pleased we played a role of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Legacy of a Iconic Controller

Top-tier marketing, be it for automobiles, clothes or video games, extends beyond mere transactions – it inspires a longing. Did Guitar Hero tap into that? “That’s exactly what we were trying to create,” he confirms. “That thrill of being a rock star on the stage. From day one, the creators felt that humans have a natural urge to make music, and they wanted to use technology to allow people to do it”.

Most of Guitar Hero games came out in just a half-decade between 2005 and 2010, featuring spin-offs like the DJ version, complete with a turntable controller, and the band-focused game. Subsequently, the publisher’s interest on peripherals waned, except for a brief comeback in 2015.

Games such as the fan project and newer releases have maintained the scene active, and there’s set to be something from the founders in development. Recently formed developers has entered production on its debut music game. The initial creators are participating in advisory roles. Are gamers prepared to welcome another game in the spirit of Guitar Hero?

“Our team believed such titles might become similar to sports games where you can releases,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much new music it could remain evergreen, so I’ve always been hopeful. There’s no reason for it to continue for future fans.”
