British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of access tunnels leading to the facility... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
